Technical Plasmas LLC was founded in 2017 by Andrew Seltzman, a plasma physicist with a Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin - Madison, to develop low cost plasma physics equipment.
A compact ion source, was initially designed for deuterium beam generation in IEC fusion neutron sources in 2009. The ion source is of the anode layer ion source (ALIS) variety, where electrons drift above a biased anode ring, ionizing neutral gas which is repelled in an ion beam.
After several individuals expressed interest in purchasing this particular ion source design, development of a mass production version was completed. After successful sales of a test batch in early 2017 and several hardware revisions, an updated design is now in production.
